article⁄Taking Turns: Strained Metaphors as Generators of Form in Computer Aided Design (1997)
abstract⁄This paper examines the role of certain graphicmetaphors as generators of form in computer aideddesign. An introduction establishes that representationin architectural design is largely metaphorical, thatmetaphor is only one among several types of rhetoricalturns, and that such turns can be of value in the designprocess. The paper then describes a case study aresidential design project in which the author used a 3Dcomputerbased modeling program to produce a type ofstrained rhetorical turn called catachresis. Through aseries of catachrestic moves, conventionalrepresentations were made to yield unconventionalarchitectural meanings. Next the paper discussesinferences from the case study regarding the play ofrhetorical turns in computer aided design. The paperconcludes with suggestions for catachrestic ‘wild card’and indeterminate functions in CAD systems to keepdesign processes and products open to uncertainty.
