Speculations on a Machine-Understandable Language for Architecture (1998)
article⁄Speculations on a Machine-Understandable Language for Architecture (1998)
abstract⁄One of the objectives of research in computeraided design in architecture has been to make computer tools or instruments for architectural design, not just drafting. There has beenwork presented at ACADIA and other conferences related to artificial intelligence, data bases, shape grammars, among others. In all of these cases, existence of a computer language in oneform or another is implied. The purpose of this paper is to argue that the progress in thedevelopment of intelligent design systems IDS is closely linked tothe progress of the languages used to implement such systems. Inorder to make the argument, we will adopt an approach of firstspecifying the characteristics of an IDS in terms of a conceptualframework of computer languages in a CAD system in general, and what it means to develop a machineunderstandable language for architectural CAD in particular. The framework is usefulfor classifying research projects and for structuring a researchagenda in architectural CAD.
