abstract⁄An argument is presented for respecting the student’s process of inductive reasoning in introductory digital modeling instruction. The inductive education methods of Montessori and VanDamme are reviewed, and relevant portions are applied to the problem of digital modeling instruction. Two primary concerns are presented 1 the need to systematically reorient the student from the physical world to the digital world and 2 the need to sequence the presentation of introductory concepts according to logical dependencies inherent in these concepts. Five principles of inductive digital modeling instruction are established, which could act as the basis for a teaching method that reduces alienation among apprehensive students, eases the transition from traditional media for veteran designers, and speeds comprehension of core concepts of digital making.
