An Experiment in Design Collaboration (1998)
article⁄An Experiment in Design Collaboration (1998)
abstract⁄Computer supported communication and collaborationamong partners in the building design and construction processare no longer mere possibilities, but, given the will and knowhowof the participants, a reality. Team members could work on abuilding design at any place, simultaneously together synchronously or separately asynchronously, while the latest state of thedesign would always be available in a shared database. But tobe successful, this emerging type of cooperation often requiresnew design and communication methods. This paper documents an experimental approach to design collaboration, tested in an intensive, oneweek long VirtualDesign Studio exercise involving three academic institutions. Itbriefly describes the structure and goals of the studio exercise, themethodologies applied, the resulting process of collaboration, and the lessons learned.
